Why Learning Plex ERP Navigation Is the Make-or-Break Skill for ERP Adoption

ERP implementations don't usually fail on the software. They fail on Monday morning, when a new hire logs in for the first time, stares at the launch page, and quietly decides to keep using the spreadsheet.

I've watched this happen for years. The system goes live, the consultants leave, and the people who actually run the plant get about twenty minutes of "here's how you log in" before they're expected to be productive. What follows is predictable: workarounds, shadow spreadsheets, tribal knowledge that never makes it into the system, and data nobody trusts.

Here's the uncomfortable truth: adoption is a navigation problem before it's anything else.

A new Plex user who can log in confidently, find their launch page, read the navigation bar, search for a record with the % wildcard, sort a display grid, and save a favorite is a user who will actually use the system. A user who can't do those things by the end of day one will route around the system by the end of week one. And every workaround is a small vote against the implementation.

The good news: navigation is the cheapest skill in the building to teach. It doesn't require a consultant, a classroom, or a week off the floor. It requires about an hour of structured walkthrough on the things people touch every single day:
Logging in - including the Azure or Okta sign-in most companies actually use

  • The launch page and what each section is for
  • The navigation bar - menu, messages, history, favorites, setup, help, and the menu search (Ctrl+M)
  • Finding records with search and the % wildcard
  • Reading the display grid and the action bar
  • Saving favorites so the tenth visit is as fast as the first

That's the Day One journey. Get that right and everything downstream - transactions, reporting, data quality - gets easier, because the system stops being something people avoid.

I built a short video course around exactly this: Plex ERP Day One: Login and Navigation. Fourteen bite-size lessons covering the full first-day journey, from login to the tips experienced users take for granted. It's the course I wish every new hire watched before their first shift.

If you're implementing Plex out to a new plant, onboarding temps for a busy season, or just tired of answering the same navigation questions, start here. Adoption starts on day one.
